How Content Can Have An Unexpected Impact .
In which some research evokes a ship load of memories.
While doing some research on structured content industry standards for a client this week, I came across mention of ‘The Green Book,’ which is a collection of procedures related to insurance in the shipping industry. Doesn’t sound very exciting does it? But it sure triggered a lot of memories for me.
My late father was an expert on maritime insurance and ran the insurance side of a major British shipping company for most of his career. My first summer job was also in his office.
Because of that connection I started my career in the Merchant Navy on board container ships - my first degree is in Marine Engineering. And it was on board one of those ships (in fact the one in the photo above) that I decided to move into the world of technical publications. (Which is a whole other story I told here.)
While looking for a photo of that ship online I also came across an image of the company’s in-house magazine from the mid-1970s. Around that time that in-house magazine was the first place I received a publishing credit - not for writing, but for photography.
This all got me thinking about the emotional connections in our content. You never know what sort of impact even the most routine and apparently unremarkable content may have.
I never expected a search for content standards to unlock a literal ship-load of memories - yet that is precisely what it did.
